The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, has assured the public that an investigation is ongoing to uncover how Richard Ahiagbah, the Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), managed to vote in the 2020 elections despite his name not appearing on the voter’s register, myjoyonline reports.
Mrs. Mensa emphasized the importance of this investigation in a recent briefing to Parliament, highlighting the potential implications for the integrity of future elections.
Richard Ahiagbah confirmed the allegations, admitting that he voted in the 2020 general elections even though his name was not listed in the register.
This admission came after the National Democratic Congress (NDC) accused him of committing a crime of double registration when he attempted to register at a center in Ketu South in the Volta Region.
According to Ahiagbah, he was informed by EC officials at the polling station that his name was missing from the register.
Despite this discrepancy, an EC official recorded Ahiagbah’s identification number and other details at the bottom of the register, which permitted him to cast his vote.
This incident has raised significant concerns about the electoral process’s transparency and accuracy, prompting the EC to initiate a thorough investigation.
Mrs. Mensa assured that the findings of this investigation would be made public in due course.
Mrs. Mensa further stressed the need to prevent such incidents from recurring in future elections.
She promised that the EC would provide updates on the investigation before the upcoming general elections to ensure that all stakeholders are informed about the measures being taken to safeguard the electoral process.
The assurance comes as part of broader efforts to enhance public confidence in the electoral system and ensure a fair and transparent election in 2024.
