Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has filed a defamation lawsuit against Asaase Radio and ABC News.
The legal action follows a viral video alleging that Gyamfi and his wife took a lavish trip to Miami, supposedly funded by the NDC. Gyamfi denies these claims, calling them “baseless and senseless,” and is seeking GH¢10 million in damages.
In his statement, Gyamfi asserted that the accusations are entirely false and malicious. He claims that the defendants acted recklessly, disregarding the truth, with the intent to damage his reputation.
“Plaintiff avers that he has never been to the said Betsy Hotel in Miami, Florida in the United States of America and has never paid or misappropriated US$3000 a day on hotel accommodation or US$42,000 on hotel accommodation over a two-week period from monies allocated to him by his party, as falsely claimed by the Defendants,” he stated.
Gyamfi is determined to clear his name and address the harm caused to his personal and professional standing.
He is also petitioning the court to compel ABC News and Asaase Radio to issue an unreserved apology through their platforms and publish a public apology on the front page of the Daily Graphic newspaper for three consecutive days.
Additionally, he demands a retraction and an unqualified apology from each defendant using the same medium they used to publish the defamatory statements.
