Special voting is being conducted today, December 5, 2024, in the Western and Eastern Regions following a rescheduling from December 2.
This follows the successful commencement of the exercise across 14 regions on Monday, December 2
The Electoral Commission (EC) postponed the exercise after detecting a leakage of ballot papers, a move aimed at protecting the election’s credibility.
The EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa, explained that the recall and reprinting of ballot papers were necessary to preserve the voting process’s integrity. Speaking at an emergency news conference on December 1, she assured Ghanaians that the Commission was committed to ensuring a free and fair election.
With 328 special voting centres across the country, this year’s special voting exercise accommodates 131,478 registered voters, including security personnel, media practitioners, and election officials. These individuals cast their votes early to fulfill their duties on general election day.
Deputy EC Chairperson, Dr. Bossman Asare, confirmed the Commission’s readiness for the voting process in the Western and Eastern Regions. Speaking on December 4, he revealed that 33 voting centres were prepared in the Eastern Region and 17 in the Western Region, urging all registered special voters to participate.
Dr. Asare reminded voters that failure to participate in today’s special voting would forfeit their chance to vote in this election. He reiterated the EC’s commitment to conducting a transparent and efficient process, ensuring the credibility of the 2024 general elections.
