The Member of Parliament for Sunyani West, Hon. Millicent Amankwah, has condemned the violence that disrupted the Ablekuma North by-election, stressing the importance of responsible leadership and calm political conduct during electoral periods. Her remarks were delivered on the floor of Parliament in response to a statement by the Minority Leader.
Hon. Amankwah noted that political leaders have a duty to maintain peace and stability, particularly during elections when tensions often run high. She highlighted that careless political commentary and provocative language can heighten divisions and lead to unrest, placing lives at risk.
She also called for a review of the country’s anti-vigilante law, indicating that the current legal framework may require amendments to effectively address and prevent future occurrences of political violence. Her call supports ongoing concerns about the enforcement and sufficiency of existing legislation.
The Sunyani West MP urged Parliament to collectively promote peace, set the right example for political engagement, and educate the public against violence. Her statement adds to growing voices within the House advocating for accountability, legal reform, and a violence-free political environment ahead of future elections.
