Kofi Akpaloo, the Founder and Leader of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), has strongly condemned the recent press briefing conducted by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Chief Justice Torkornoo had proposed five judges to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, aiming to address the backlog of cases in the judiciary. The proposal, aimed at bolstering the capacity of the Supreme Court to handle its workload, sparked controversy.

At the press briefing last Thursday, the NDC condemned Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo’s proposal to nominate judges to the Supreme Court, asserting that the nomination was unconstitutional.

However, Mr Akpaloo described the NDC’s position as unnecessary, stating that the Chief Justice is empowered to suggest judges to the President for nomination to the Supreme Court.

In an interview on Hot 93.9 FM’s Dwene Ho Biom with Agya Wusu Ansah, Mr Akpaloo stated “At a time when there is a critical need for more judges to expedite court cases across the country, I see no issue with the Chief Justice’s initiative,”

Speaking on the financial implications of delayed cases, Akpaloo emphasized, “The costs incurred by the state and individuals due to prolonged litigation are substantial. It is in the interest of justice and efficiency to address these delays promptly.”

Addressing concerns over judicial impartiality, Akpaloo defended the nominated judges, saying, “These judges have been trained professionally. Their previous roles in the Court of Appeal demonstrate their capability to adjudicate cases objectively, devoid of any political bias.”

Meanwhile, Attorney General and Minister of Justice Godfred Yeboah Dame has rejected claims by the NDC that President Akufo-Addo is appointing Supreme Court judges who are favorable to the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The AG stated that these allegations are unfounded, and he emphasized that the nominations were submitted at the Chief Justice’s behest in line with operational needs.

In conclusion, Akpaloo reaffirmed his confidence in the judiciary, stating, “No judge would allow partisan issues to interfere with their professional responsibilities.” He emphasized the importance of maintaining trust in Ghana’s judicial system, pledging support for measures aimed at enhancing its efficiency and fairness.
