“What was sauce for the goose is now sauce for the gander” — Sam George fires back at Bawumia

Ningo-Prampram Member of Parliament (MP), Sam Nartey George, has criticised Former Vice President and 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, accusing him of hypocrisy in his recent condemnation of electoral violence during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.

The July 11, 2025, rerun followed months of political tension after the Electoral Commission annulled the initial December 2024 results due to chaos, disagreements, and irregularities in the collation of results from 19 polling stations. The original vote was contested by both the NDC and NPP, making Ablekuma North the only constituency left without a declared MP following the 2024 general elections.

On the day of the rerun, violence erupted at St. Peter’s Methodist polling station in Odorkor. Former Fisheries Minister, Mavis Hawa Koomson, and NPP parliamentary candidate Nana Akua Afriyie were both attacked by unidentified individuals. Voting was briefly halted, and videos of the incident sparked outrage across political and civic circles.

Dr. Bawumia responded to the incident by describing the attack as “a serious threat to Ghana’s democracy” and calling on President John Mahama to ensure swift justice. “This will be a recipe for disaster if each political party will raise its own army,” he warned.

Sam George, however, was quick to challenge Bawumia’s stance. Referring to his own experience as a sitting MP, during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election on January 31, 2019—where he was physically assaulted by masked security operatives—he accused Bawumia of selective outrage.

“What was sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander,” George posted on X, taking aim at what he called the former Vice President’s silence during the 2019 violence.

He added, “I am still waiting for the Police to act on my complaint from Ayawaso West Wuogon. It must be treated as a first‑come, first‑served basis.”

The rerun concluded with the National Democratic Congress’s Ewurabena Aubynn securing 34,090 votes—a narrow win over NPP’s Nana Akua Afriyie’s 33,881, making history as the first NDC MP in Ablekuma North in over two decades.
