The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has inaugurated a seven-member Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the 15th Africa Armwrestling Championship, scheduled to be hosted in Accra in 2026.
The ceremony, held at the Ministry’s conference room on Tuesday, marked the official start of preparations for the continental event, which has been christened “Accra 2026.” The Minister charged the committee to ensure a well-organised and successful championship that would enhance Ghana’s sporting image on the African stage.
Addressing the gathering, Mr Adams said the championship goes beyond competition, describing it as a platform for unity, cultural exchange and recognition of athletes across the continent. He reaffirmed government’s commitment to supporting all sporting disciplines, including armwrestling, through proper structure and development.
He also praised the growth of armwrestling in Ghana, noting that the sport has made significant strides in recent years and now requires strong organisation to sustain its progress.
President of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation, Charles Osei Asibey, expressed confidence in Accra’s readiness to host a world-class championship. He said the LOC brings together experienced professionals who are committed to showcasing Africa’s talent, strength and hospitality.
Following their inauguration, members of the committee were sworn in and pledged to work towards the effective planning and execution of the championship.
