Akim Oda MP insists NPP’s ‘Democracy under Attack’ protest will go ahead despite ‘fake letters’

The Member of Parliament for Akim Oda, Hon. Alexander Akwasi Acquah, has insisted that the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) planned “Democracy under Attack” demonstration will go ahead as scheduled on Thursday, August 6, despite what he described as attempts to derail the protest through the circulation of fake letters.

Speaking ahead of the demonstration, the Akim Oda MP accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of becoming unsettled by the planned protest and attempting to create confusion.

“I don’t know why our friends in the NDC have all of a sudden become nervous of tomorrow’s demo and therefore throwing in fake letters. We are hitting the grounds tomorrow, come rain or shine,” Hon. Acquah stated.

The opposition NPP announced the nationwide protest to express concerns over what it describes as growing threats to Ghana’s constitutional order, democratic governance and the independence of key state institutions.

According to the party, the demonstration seeks to call on constitutional bodies to uphold the principles of justice, fairness, accountability, due process and institutional independence.

Organisers say participants will assemble at the Community Centre in Accra before marching to the Supreme Court to present the first petition. The procession will then move through the Efua Sutherland enclave before proceeding to the Presidency via the Ako Adjei Interchange to submit a second petition.

The NPP maintains that the protest will proceed peacefully as planned, despite the alleged circulation of documents it claims are intended to undermine the demonstration.
