Member of Parliament for Asunafo North, Mohammed Haruna, has expressed surprise at the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision to elect former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as its flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
Speaking in an interview with the media , the NDC lawmaker said he was shocked that NPP delegates would rally behind Dr Bawumia again, despite what he described as the party’s poor economic record over the past eight years.
According to Mr Haruna, Dr Bawumia, who served as Head of the Economic Management Team, presided over a period in which the Ghanaian cedi depreciated sharply against the US dollar, at one point nearing GH¢17 to a dollar.
“The same person who led the economic management team for eight years and supervised the collapse of the cedi has been elected again. For us in the NDC, that is a cool chop in 2028,” he stated.
The Asunafo North MP questioned the NPP’s seriousness about returning to power, arguing that the choice of Dr Bawumia sends the wrong signal to Ghanaians ahead of the next general elections.
He further criticised the NPP’s internal decision-making process, accusing the party leadership of imposing candidates through what he described as a top-to-bottom approach, rather than allowing genuine grassroots influence.
Mr Haruna, however, praised the Mahama-led NDC government, saying it is focused on stabilising the economy and working in the best interest of Ghanaians.
According to him, the NDC is confident heading into the 2028 elections, insisting that the party’s future is firmly in its own hands.
