The Mayor of Accra, Madam Elizabeth Sackey, has announced plans by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to reintroduce the Town Council System in an effort to make the city cleaner.
This system, which was historically used to maintain cleanliness and personal hygiene, involved fining or arresting individuals who neglected their surroundings.
“In the olden days, the Town Council System ensured that Ghanaians were always vigilant about keeping their surroundings clean,” Madam Sackey explained. “People were fined or arrested for making their vicinity dirty and disregarding personal hygiene.”
Speaking to Hot News, Mayor Sackey emphasized that with the introduction of sanitation courts, the AMA will strictly enforce these regulations. “We are not going to spare persons who make the city dirty,” she stated. “The environmental and health officers of the assembly will intensify their efforts to ensure that recalcitrant individuals within the city are dealt with.”
The reintroduction of the Town Council System aims to replicate the success of past initiatives, ensuring that the citizens of Accra remain alert and proactive about maintaining cleanliness in their environment.
