Animal abuse or animal cruelty is inflicting physical pain, suffering or death on an animal, usually a tame one, beyond the necessity for regular discipline. It can include neglect that is so monstrous (withholding food and water) that the animal has suffered, died or been put in imminent danger of death.
Cruelty and neglect cross all social and economic boundaries and media reports suggest that animal abuse is common in rural and urban areas.
The animals whose abuse is most often reported are dogs, cats, horses and livestock. Undercover investigations have revealed that animal abuse abounds in the factory farm industry.
