Member of Parliament for Damango, Samuel Abdulai Jinapor, has called on Parliament to urgently summon the Minister for Foreign Affairs to brief the House on reported xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
The Damango legislator, who also serves as Ranking Member on Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, made the request during parliamentary proceedings, urging that the minister appear before the House as early as May 22, 2026.
According to Samuel Abdulai Jinapor, the briefing had become necessary following the postponement of a planned engagement on the matter, describing the developments in South Africa as “unfortunate and very disturbing.”
“Mr Speaker, my request to the Majority Leader is if he could get the Minister for Foreign Affairs to appear before this House, hopefully tomorrow,” he stated on the floor of Parliament.
He stressed that lawmakers needed direct information from government rather than relying on secondary reports, insisting that Parliament must be properly informed about Ghana’s position and response to the situation.
The MP further noted that an official briefing would allow Members of Parliament to make informed contributions and determine the appropriate course of action.
“So we can all have the opportunity to intervene,” he added.
Samuel Abdulai Jinapor, however, did not provide details on the nature of the attacks or indicate the number of Ghanaians affected during his submission.
The Majority Leader did not immediately respond to the request, while Parliament is yet to confirm whether the Foreign Affairs Minister will appear before the House on the proposed date.
