Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has donated six brand-new pickup vehicles to the Asunafo South District Health Directorate to support the implementation of the Free Primary Healthcare programme.

The vehicles were presented during the official launch of the programme in the Asunafo South District, where government officials, health professionals, traditional leaders, local authorities and residents gathered to mark the commencement of the initiative.

The six pickups have been allocated to Kukuom Hospital, Sankore Polyclinic, Kwapong Health Centre, Nakatey Clinic, Tettekwo Clinic and Asiberem Clinic.

The vehicles are expected to improve the mobility of health workers and enable them to reach communities, particularly those in hard-to-reach areas, more efficiently.

They will also support emergency response, disease surveillance, immunisation exercises, maternal and child health programmes, health education and other outreach activities.

Speaking at the launch, Mr Opoku said the vehicles were procured to strengthen the operational capacity of the health facilities and support the effective delivery of free primary healthcare services.

He urged health officials to use the vehicles strictly for official purposes and maintain them properly to ensure they remain useful for years.

The Minister also commended health workers for their dedication to serving residents despite the logistical challenges confronting the sector.

District Director of Health, Kwadwo Ansong, expressed appreciation for the intervention, saying inadequate transportation had previously affected the Directorate’s ability to conduct outreach programmes, supervise facilities and respond promptly to emergencies.

He said the new vehicles would significantly improve healthcare workers’ mobility and strengthen the delivery of essential services across the district.

Mr Ansong assured the Minister that the vehicles would be used solely for healthcare-related activities and that proper maintenance and accountability measures would be implemented.

The donation forms part of efforts to strengthen logistics and improve access to primary healthcare as the Free Primary Healthcare programme is rolled out.
