The Alliance for Restoration of Civil Rights has announced a nationwide protest against the Ghana Police Service, slated for September 11, 2024.
The demonstration, titled “Occupy and Cleanse the Crime Scene,” aims to address perceived systematic failures within the Service and demand accountability from top officials.
At a press conference, William Kofi Yirenkyi, the group’s Convenor, criticized the Ghana Police Service for its handling of several serious criminal complaints.
Yirenkyi specifically targeted Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department, ACP Faustina Agyeiwaa Kodua Andoh-Kwofi; Greater Accra Regional Commander, DCOP Arhin Kwasi Annor; and Superintendent Augustine Offei, Commander of the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit. He accused these officials of neglecting crucial cases involving violence and threats to national security.
Yirenkyi highlighted alarming statistics showing a drastic decline in public trust towards the Police Service.
Only 28% of Ghanaians currently have confidence in the Service, with 65% labeling it as the most corrupt institution in Ghana.
This erosion of trust has prompted the group to call for the immediate dismissal of the targeted officials and a resignation of Inspector General of Police George Akuffo Dampare if significant reforms are not implemented within a week.
The protest underscores growing frustration with the police force and its perceived role in perpetuating injustice rather than upholding the law.
The Alliance for Restoration of Civil Rights is calling on the government to take swift action to restore public faith in the Ghana Police Service and ensure that it fulfills its role as a protector of citizens.
