Majority Leader and Bawku Central Member of Parliament (MP), Mahama Ayariga, has stated that Parliament of Ghana is currently ranked as the second most open legislature in Africa in terms of transparency and public accessibility.
Speaking at a Leadership Media Briefing on Friday, May 22, 2026, as Parliament resumed sitting for the second meeting of the second session, Mahama Ayariga said Ghana’s legislature had made significant progress in promoting openness through reforms and improved public engagement.
“In Africa, we are one of the most open parliaments. In fact, we are number two in Africa. I believe that our aspiration is that we become number one in Africa,” he stated.
According to him, Ghana’s parliamentary system continues to gain recognition despite debates over comparisons between unicameral and bicameral legislatures across the continent.
“There is an issue whether we should be put in the category of those who practise the bicameral parliament. We have a unicameral Parliament. But they have number one, and we followed,” he explained.
Mahama Ayariga further indicated that the introduction of live television broadcasts of parliamentary proceedings has significantly enhanced transparency and public participation in legislative business.
“Now that we have live television broadcasting of our proceedings, in the next rating they might probably review that and Ghana may climb to the top as a parliament,” he added.
The Majority Leader’s remarks come amid ongoing efforts by Parliament to improve public trust, accountability and citizen engagement through expanded media access and digital outreach initiatives.
