The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has issued a firm directive to Hassan Ayariga, leader of the All People’s Congress (APC), to immediately cease using the title “Dr.” following his failure to provide credible documentation to support the academic qualification.

The Commission said it made prior attempts to verify the legitimacy of the title but received no response.

“To date, the Commission has not received any response from you. This continued silence is unacceptable,” the letter signed by Deputy Director-General Prof. Augustine Ocloo stated.

GTEC warned that the unauthorized use of academic titles “is misleading and inconsistent with the academic protocols and standards governing the conferment and use of academic ranks in Ghana.”

In a letter dated July 14, 2025, the Commission demanded that Ayariga provide specific details, including the name of the institution that awarded the degree, whether it was honorary or earned, the conferment date, and the academic process involved.

His failure to comply has now triggered a deadline of July 31, 2025, for the removal of the title from all official materials.

The directive, which threatens legal action if ignored, underscores GTEC’s ongoing efforts to protect academic integrity in public life.

As of press time, Hassan Ayariga had not issued any public response. The development reignites the broader conversation about academic accountability among Ghana’s political elites.
