Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced that Ghana has successfully contained the monkeypox (mpox) outbreak, revealing that no new cases have been recorded since June 2, 2025.
The Minister disclosed this when he appeared before Parliament’s Government Assurance Committee to account for commitments made by the Ministry of Health.
According to him, the government’s response, including an extensive vaccination campaign and intensified public education, has helped bring the outbreak under control.
“We have been able to contain monkeypox, and I’m happy to tell the committee that for the past one month we’ve not recorded any case. We secured about 33,000 doses, and they were administered in targeted regions including the Ashanti, Western and Central regions,” Mr. Akandoh said.
He assured the Committee that the disease is currently under control, stating that, “As I speak to you now, I can confidently say that we’ve not recorded any new case of monkeypox since second of June.”
Despite the positive development, the Health Minister said surveillance, public awareness campaigns and monitoring activities would continue in affected areas to prevent a resurgence of the disease.
Mr. Akandoh also disclosed that eight people died during the outbreak, explaining that all the deceased had serious underlying medical conditions.
“Yes, we lost about eight lives, but they had other underlying comorbidities. Somebody may have been hypertensive or diabetic, and so we lost eight lives,” he told the Committee.
The Government Assurance Committee said it will continue to monitor the Ministry of Health’s commitments and interventions to ensure the country remains prepared to respond effectively to any future public health threats.
