Carlos Queiroz reportedly resigned as head coach of the Black Stars after becoming frustrated with several conditions surrounding his brief second spell in charge, including training arrangements, player selection and the level of control given to him over the team.
According to information gathered by KickGH.com, the Portuguese coach submitted his resignation on Wednesday morning before meeting Ghana Football Association (GFA) officials later in the day for a debrief.
During the meeting, Queiroz is said to have outlined several reasons why he could not continue in the role, despite the GFA later announcing that both parties had mutually agreed to terminate his contract.
One of his major concerns was reportedly the Black Stars’ training arrangements.
Queiroz was said to have been surprised that the team trained every day at the same stadium where they played their matches instead of using a separate training facility.
The 73-year-old coach also reportedly complained about his late arrival in Ghana ahead of the team’s camp.
He is said to have preferred arriving in the country at least 10 days before the players assembled to allow him adequate time to prepare, but arrived only two days before camp because his ticket was not made available early enough.
Accommodation was also reportedly raised as an issue.
Queiroz wanted the Black Stars to stay at the Kempinski Hotel, but the team was instead accommodated at the African Regent Hotel.
Alisa Hotel was reportedly not considered because of outstanding payments owed by the GFA from previous stays.
More significantly, Queiroz reportedly felt he did not have complete control over the Black Stars setup.
He is said to have complained to close associates about interference in team selection, including the presence of some players in camp whose involvement he was reportedly not aware of.
The coach also wanted greater authority over the appointment of his backroom staff.
He reportedly sought to bring in his own doctor, nutritionist, team manager and other members of his technical team, but was only given control over the appointment of a nutritionist.
His concerns appear to provide context to his farewell statement following his departure, in which he said the conditions he needed to work effectively had not been fully established.
“Despite our commitment and efforts, the necessary conditions were not fully established, and our recent performance added to the decision to bring this journey to an end,” Queiroz said.
The GFA, however, has officially described the decision as a mutual termination following discussions with the coach.
Queiroz’s second spell in charge lasted less than a month after his reappointment on September 2.
His departure followed Ghana’s poor start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, with the Black Stars suffering a 2-0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire before losing 4-2 at home to The Gambia.
The results left Ghana without a point from their opening two Group C matches.
The GFA is yet to announce a replacement for Queiroz as it considers the next steps for the Black Stars.
