I don’t support Mahama’s call to criminalise sex-for-jobs – NPP communicator[Video]

A member of the communication team of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alhaji Ali Kabe, has stated that he does not support President John Dramani Mahama’s call to legislate against demanding sexual favours in exchange for jobs.

The President made the remarks during an engagement at Adweso in Koforidua on Saturday, May 3, at the close of his two-day “Resetting Ghana” tour of the Eastern Region.

President Mahama condemned what he described as exploitative behaviour by some employers who allegedly make intimate relationships a condition for offering jobs, particularly to women seeking employment.

“One of the worst things—and I think we should pass a bill to make it punishable—is that sometimes if the employer or the person responsible for employing is a male, they demand some romantic relationship before they give them jobs. It is unacceptable. It must stop,” he stated.

He stressed that such conduct must attract strict legal consequences, insisting that the country cannot tolerate abuse and exploitation within the workplace.

Reacting to President Mahama’s call on Accra-based Hot 93.9FM‘s ‘Hot Morning Drive‘ show  – hosted by Oman Nana, Alhaji Ali Kabe stated categorically that he does not support the criminalisation of sex-for-jobs practices.

According to him, anyone looking for a job is old enough to make their own decisions; hence, if there is a mutual agreement between two adults, he doesn’t see anything amiss.

He described the proposal as unnecessary by indicating that, “The lady who is going to look for the job, is she an 11-year-old? It’s between two adults… He said he would give you the work in exchange for sex, and you agreed. For Christ’s sake!”

When asked whether he would advise his daughter to engage in such a practice, the outspoken NPP communicator said, “I will advise my daughter not to do that, but she is old enough to decide on what is good for her.”

He explained that once the employer fulfils his part of the bargain, there is nothing wrong with the arrangement.
