The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is gearing up for the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections, with its campaign set to launch next month. John Dramani Mahama, the party’s flag bearer, announced the campaign launch during a visit to the Ayawaso West Wuogon and Adentan constituencies in the Greater Accra Region.
He outlined plans to deploy party members nationwide to garner support and votes.
During his visit, Mahama interacted with various stakeholders, including chiefs, clergy members, students, market women, and the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo.
At a mini rally held at the Elizabeth Sey Hostel in Legon, Mahama emphasized his commitment to policies that would benefit all citizens, not just a select few.
“I am seeking re-election to implement the right policies that will improve the lives of all citizens,” he stated.
Mahama addressed students at the University of Ghana, urging them to trust him and NDC parliamentary aspirant John Dumelo to bring about positive changes. He noted the university’s population growth had outpaced its infrastructure development, leading to congestion in residential halls.
Mahama pledged to collaborate with the private sector to build more hostel facilities, aiming to alleviate the accommodation crisis on campus.
In Adentan, Mahama met with traditional rulers and clergy members, describing the country’s current economic situation as the worst in recent history.
“Everyone in this country is a witness to the current situation of the economy,” he said.
Mahama criticized the government’s performance, pointing out that Ghana, once the second-largest economy in the subregion under his rule, had now been surpassed by Cote d’Ivoire.
He highlighted the high levels of unemployment and the rising cost of living, with fuel prices reaching an all-time high of about GH¢16 per litre.
“If with all the corruption, capture of state lands, and poor performance of the economy, voters return the NPP to power, they will see it as a reward for bad performance,” Mahama added.
He vowed to set up a commission of inquiry to investigate corruption and address issues such as poor road conditions and stagnant water supply in Adentan if elected.
