In a move aimed at deepening Ghana’s connection with its global community, President John Dramani Mahama has named Kofi Okyere Darko (KOD), a prominent figure in Ghanaian media, fashion, and culture, as his Presidential Adviser on Diaspora Affairs.
This appointment signals a concerted effort to leverage the expertise and resources of Ghanaians living abroad for the nation’s development.
KOD, born on January 13, 1978, in Winneba, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. His journey, rooted in the Central Region of Ghana, began with his early education in Winneba and at Nifa Secondary School in Adukrom, culminating in studies at the Ghana Institute of Journalism.
His familial background, with his father, James Aidoo, serving as a retired deputy director of the Ghana Prisons, and his mother, Margaret Aidoo, a founding member of the 31 December Women’s Movement, instilled in him a deep sense of national service.
His professional trajectory showcases a diverse and impactful career. Beginning as a production assistant at Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, KOD’s path led him to Radio Gold and subsequently to the United Kingdom, where he gained valuable experience working with renowned fashion brands like Ted Baker and Paul Smith.
Upon his return to Ghana, he continued to excel in the media landscape, holding key positions at the EIB Network’s LIVE FM and currently hosting the popular Starr Drive on Starr FM in Accra.
Beyond his media presence, KOD is recognized as a cultural ambassador and fashion entrepreneur, demonstrating a consistent ability to connect Ghana with its diaspora.
His understanding of both the Ghanaian and international landscape positions him uniquely to foster stronger ties, promote investment opportunities, and enhance cultural and economic collaboration between Ghana and its diaspora communities.
President Mahama’s decision to appoint KOD reflects a strategic focus on harnessing the potential of the diaspora to contribute to Ghana’s growth and development.
The media mogul, who is married to fashion designer Ophelia Crossland and father to two daughters, will play a pivotal role in strengthening these crucial connections.
