2022 Ballon d’Or Winners: Lewandowski, Sadio, Gavi, Benzema & Courtois

Karim Benzema has won the Ballon d’Or, becoming only the fifth Frenchman to do so and at 34 years old is the oldest winner since Stanley Matthews in 1956.
Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo had won 12 of the last 13 Ballon d’Ors – with Real Madrid’s Luka Modric winning as the sole outlier in 2018 – but Messi was not even nominated for the 2022 award. Ronaldo finished 20th this year.
Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas grabbed the Ballon d’Or Feminin for the second year running.

 

Kopa Trophy – Gavi

The Kopa Trophy is an association football award presented to the best-performing player under the age of 21. Pablo Martín Páez Gavira, known as Gavi, is a Spanish professional footballer who plays as a central midfielder for La Liga club Barcelona and the Spain national team.

Club of the Year – Manchester City

The award follows on from City receiving the highest number of nominations across the different categories at the Ballon d’Or and saw us finish ahead of Liverpool in second and Real Madrid, who finished third.

Socrates Award – Sadio Mane

The award is named after the late Brazilian footballer Socrates, who co-founded the Corinthians Democracy movement, in opposition to the ruling military government in 1980s Brazil. Senegal’s Sadio Mane wins first-ever Socrates Award for humanitarian work.

Gerd Muller Trophy – Robert Lewandowski

The Gerd Müller Trophy, previously known as Striker of the Year or Best Striker Award in its first edition, is an association football award presented annually by France Football to the highest-scoring footballer in the previous season. FC Barcelona forward Robert Lewandowski netted 14 times in 13 outings to date for Barça, and had a spectacular 2021/22 when still at Bayern Munich, scoring 50 times in 46 games (a goal every 80 minutes) while also finding the target seven times for Poland.

Yashin Trophy – Thibaut Courtois

The Yashin Trophy is an association football award presented annually by France Football to the best-performing goalkeeper. The award is named after Russian goalkeeper Lev Yashin, and the winner is selected by former Ballon d’Or winners. Thibaut Nicolas Marc Courtois is a Belgian professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for the La Liga club Real Madrid and the Belgium national team.
Ballon d’Or Feminin – Alexia Putellas

The Ballon d’Or Féminin, also known as the Women’s Ballon d’Or, is an association football award presented by France Football that honours the best female association football player. Alexia Putellas Segura is a Spanish professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Primera División club Barcelona, which she captains, and the Spain national team

Ballon d’Or – Karim Benzema

The Ballon d’Or is an annual football award presented by the French news magazine France Football since 1956. Between 2010 and 2015, in an agreement with FIFA, the award was temporarily merged with the FIFA World Player of the Year and known as the FIFA Ballon d’Or. Karim Mostafa Benzema is a French professional footballer who plays as a striker for and captains La Liga club Real Madrid and the France national team. A creative and prolific forward, Benzema is often regarded as one of the best strikers of all time.
