The Member of Parliament for Ahafo Ano South-East, Yakubu Mohamed, has issued a strong warning to illegal miners, declaring his constituency a no-go area for galamsey activities.
The MP said he would not give peace to anyone involved in illegal mining, stressing that galamsey continues to destroy water bodies and farmlands within the area.
His comments follow a viral video circulating on social media in which he was seen confronting alleged Chinese nationals and warning them to desist from engaging in illegal mining activities in his constituency.
Yakubu Mohamed questioned why the current generation is destroying natural resources when Ghana’s forefathers benefited from gold without degrading the environment. He noted that the destruction of land and water bodies poses a serious threat to livelihoods, food security and the future of local communities.
The lawmaker made the remarks during an interview with the media, where he reiterated his commitment to protecting the environment and safeguarding community interests. He also praised President John Dramani Mahama for the introduction of cooperative mining, which he said would help create sustainable jobs for the youth while promoting responsible and environmentally friendly mining practices.
The MP’s actions have drawn significant public attention, with many Ghanaians commending his stance against illegal mining. His intervention comes amid renewed national efforts to clamp down on galamsey, particularly the involvement of foreign nationals, which continues to generate widespread public concern.
