Nine individuals have been arrested for engaging in malpractices during the ongoing 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

Among the culprits are seven teachers from various locations, including Bekwai in the Ashanti Region and Tema in the Greater Accra Region.

John Kapi, Head of Public Affairs at the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC), confirmed the arrests in an interview with Accra-based Channel One News.

“We also arrested one person at Nkoranza Senior High School, one person at Chemu Senior High School, Tema, and two others in the Bono region. Additionally, there were two outsiders not related to the examination but trying to access the candidates. Seven teachers and two outsiders,” he stated.

With the exams currently in their second day, Mr. Kapi assured that tight security measures are in place to curb further malpractices.

“We have deployed more monitors to these flashpoints and appealed to our partners in the security agencies to ensure their presence is felt in those areas to prevent further incidents,” he noted.

Mr. Kapi also mentioned that the arrested teachers will be referred to the Ghana Education Service (GES) for further action.

“When we pick up teachers like this, we hand their names over to the Director General of the Ghana Education Service, as they are not our employees. The Director General will instruct the teachers’ council to take disciplinary action against them,” he explained.
