The Member of Parliament for Akyem Oda, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, has warned that delays in posting newly trained teachers and shortages of essential resources are putting pressure on Ghana’s education sector.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony of the Methodist College of Education for the Class of 2025, Acquah said Parliament was working to address concerns over the time graduates spend waiting for employment after completing their training.
“Ghanaians, let me remind you that you are graduating into a Ghana where the teacher is under pressure. Posting delays that are very real, lack of essentials and other hardships,” he said.
The lawmaker urged the graduates not to be discouraged by the challenges, while stressing the need for authorities to ensure they are posted to schools without undue delays.
“I know in Parliament we are fighting very hard for you to be posted on time. You must not stay home after four years of training,” he said.
Acquah also called on the graduates to approach the profession with a strong sense of responsibility, saying teachers remained essential to the country’s educational development.
“You are graduating into a Ghana where the teacher is more needed than ever. You, Class of 2025, must be the correction. Go and be the teacher parents can trust with their daughters and sons,” he said.
His remarks put the spotlight on the challenges facing newly trained teachers as they seek postings, as well as the importance of providing schools with the personnel and resources needed to deliver quality education.
