A three-day protest commenced today in Accra, demanding the immediate release of 53 protesters arrested during an anti-galamsey demonstration last week.

The march, organized under the banners “FreeTheCitizens” and “SayNoToGalamsey,” aims to raise awareness about the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining, locally known as galamsey.

Despite the significant public interest and support, police have heavily populated the University of Ghana sports stadium at Okponglo, with their presence exceeding that of the demonstrators.

In an interview on the Hot Morning Drive, some protesters expressed their concern over the police presence, urging Ghanaians at home to join the demonstration.

The protest began at Legon Okponglo and is set to progress to the Black Star Square, following a route approved by law enforcement.

Key locations on the path include Legon Stadium, Okponglo Traffic Light, Shiashie, Shangri-La, and Airport Traffic Light, culminating at Independence Square after passing important sites such as the National Service Secretariat, the Electoral Commission Office, and Parliament.

Organizers anticipate thousands of participants as momentum for the protest grows on social media.

The activists aim to not only highlight the unjust arrests but also emphasize the urgent need to combat illegal mining practices that continue to ravage Ghana’s environment.
