Former Education Minister under the Nana Akufo-Addo-led New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, has shed light on why top-tier Ghanaian schools like PRESEC continue to dominate academic rankings.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on Hot 93.9FM’s ‘Hot Morning Drive’ with host Oman Nana, the former Education Minister argued that students at elite institutions benefit from teachers who serve as examiners and markers.
According to him, the teachers provide them with a deeper understanding of how to answer questions to meet the West African Examination Council (WAEC) standards.
“Top schools like PRESEC, their teachers are examiners, so they had the insight that propelled them to do better than those whose teachers were not,” he noted.
Reflecting on his own educational journey, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum admitted that the concept of a marking scheme was foreign to him until he left his village school for Kumasi High School.
To bridge this gap, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum indicated that during his tenure as the Education Minister, he proposed a policy to offer five-year post-retirement contracts to veteran examiners.
The goal was to deploy these experienced educators to underperforming schools to improve their examination outcomes.
