Lawyer and National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has announced that the party will push for the impeachment of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo at an appropriate time.
Gyamfi criticized her actions as “self-seeking” in recommending judges for the Supreme Court, claiming they do not serve the country’s best interests.
Gyamfi, speaking on Joy News, monitored by hotfmghana stated, “The CJ erred, and her actions do not serve the interest of the country.”
He accused the Chief Justice of secretly making unconstitutional and irregular requests to the President regarding the appointment of Supreme Court justices, asserting that her actions indicate a predetermined agenda of favoritism.
“This CJ has a predetermined agenda of favoritism of people that she thinks she can work with at the Supreme Court,” Gyamfi said.
On July 4, the NDC accused President Nana Akufo-Addo and the Chief Justice of colluding to shield current government officials from future accountability.
The party alleged that the Judicial Council had resisted the move to elevate five judges to the Supreme Court, only for the Chief Justice and the President to covertly override this decision.
NDC General Secretary Fifi Kwetey described the nomination of the five justices as unjust, calling for transparency and fairness in the judicial appointment process.
In contrast, the Majority in Parliament, led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, defended the Chief Justice’s proposal to increase the number of Supreme Court judges to 20. Afenyo-Markin insisted that the recommendation is within legal boundaries and that the Chief Justice has not violated any laws.
However, Sammy Gyamfi countered, “A CJ has no business telling the President of the Republic who and who to appoint to the Supreme Court,” and declared that the call for her resignation and removal from office would proceed at the right time.
