Accra, July 12, 2024 – The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has announced an indefinite strike action following the National Pensions Regulatory Authority’s (NPRA) approval for the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to sell a 60% stake in four hotels to Bryan Acheampong’s Rock City Hotel.

This controversial decision has sparked significant opposition from the TUC.

Dr. Yaw Baah, TUC Secretary General, expressed confusion and frustration over the NPRA’s decision to allow the deal to proceed without further consultation, especially after initially instructing SSNIT to halt the process.

“The Union does not understand why the NPRA would allow SSNIT to proceed with the deal without further engagement,” Dr. Baah stated.

Addressing the media on July 12, Dr. Baah announced the strike, which will commence on Monday, July 15.

He declared, “From Monday, July 15, 2024, all workers in Ghana must not go to work until SSNIT publicly announces the termination of the process for the sale of its shares in the hotels.”

The directive signals a nationwide halt in work activities, aimed at pressuring SSNIT to reconsider the sale.

The TUC has argued that the sale of SSNIT’s stake to Rock City Hotel is not in the best interest of Ghanaian workers, emphasizing the need for SSNIT to terminate the deal.

The union’s stance reflects broader concerns about transparency and the management of workers’ investments in the country.
