The 27th edition of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) was held on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at the Grand Arena.
It culminated in a moment many saw coming – Black Sherif taking home the night’s most prestigious honour, ‘Artiste of the Year’.
In clinching the title, he stood tall against a heavy-hitting lineup of nominees, including Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, Diana Hamilton, and Medikal.
This marks his second time ascending to the top of the Ghanaian music industry, a feat for which he is being widely celebrated.
While the showbiz scene has erupted in hysteria over the ‘Sacrifice’ crooner’s triumph, I find myself asking: “And so what?”
To be clear, this isn’t a slight against his talent. On the contrary, Black Sherif has spent the last few years proving that he is a formidable force with a creative output that is virtually unmatched.
He has set a bar so high that winning a domestic “Artiste of the Year” award feels less like a shocking victory and more like an inevitability.
At this stage in his career, a TGMA trophy is no longer “news”—it is simply a confirmation of the status quo. If we truly want to measure his impact and the trajectory of his genius, we need to look beyond our borders.
His exceptional performance on the night clearly demonstrated how remarkable he is. There’s no need to be surprised when Black Sherif takes over the local scene.
It’s time to shift the conversation from the TGMA stage to the Grammy stage. That is the only arena left that matches the scale of his ambition and his work.
