A tragic event unfolded at Mallam Junction in the Greater Accra region where a commercial vehicle, known locally as a trotro, veered off course and struck traders operating along the roadside, reportedly resulting in the deaths of three individuals.
The incident has raised significant concerns regarding the safety of roadside trading and the mechanical reliability of commercial vehicles.
The trotro, with the registration number AS 4719-18, was traveling from Gbawe Zero when its brakes allegedly malfunctioned.
This mechanical failure caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle, leading to a catastrophic collision with the traders who were conducting their daily business along the road’s shoulder.
While some traders noticed the imminent danger and managed to escape in time, others were less fortunate.
The out-of-control vehicle struck them before they could react, resulting in severe injuries and fatalities.
The force of the collision left three traders trapped under the trotro, necessitating considerable effort and time to extricate them.
This tragic accident has sparked a dialogue about the hazards of roadside trading and the need for stringent safety measures for commercial vehicles.
The community is calling for improved regulations and enforcement to prevent such devastating incidents in the future.
