Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, a senior aide to former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako—popularly known as Chairman Wontumi—has alleged a plot by five prison inmates to poison the incarcerated politician inside the Nsawam Medium Security Prison.
Speaking to the media following a court appearance and subsequent visits to the facility, Dr. Boakye-Danquah disclosed that Wontumi himself alerted him to the alleged threat.
According to the aide, another party overheard a conversation among five inmates plotting the act and raised an alarm, prompting immediate security interventions.
“Chairman mentioned that to me when he came to court. I contacted the officer in charge, who confirmed the development and assured me that an investigation had been launched. .A committee has been set up to probe the incident, and the five inmates have since been transferred to a different cell while inquiries continue.,” Dr. Boakye-Danquah stated
Despite the grave allegations, the aide clarified that no medical reports suggest any poison was ingested, confirming that Wontumi remains in stable health and unperturbed by the event.
“Chairman Wontumi is calm and not frightened…We know the God we serve will not allow the plans of the evil one to prevail.”He said
Responding to public skepticism regarding the timing and nature of the disclosure, Dr. Boakye-Danquah rejected claims that the story was fabricated for sympathy or leverage.
He emphasized that prison authorities are handling the matter internally to establish the exact circumstances and intent behind the reported plot.
The former regional party chairman is currently serving a prison sentence at Nsawam following a conviction related to mining operations carried out on his Samreboi concession. His legal team has filed an appeal against the conviction and is seeking a temporary release pending the outcome of the appellate court proceedings
