Former President and Presidential Candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has sent a congratulatory message to the Prime Minister-elect of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, following his emphatic victory in yesterday’s general elections.
In his message, John Mahama expressed optimism about a robust partnership between Ghana and the UK, drawing a parallel between the UK Labour Party’s success and his hopes for the NDC in the upcoming December 2024 elections.
“Congratulations to PM Keir Starmer and the UK Labour Party on their landslide victory in the British elections. The people have spoken, and I look forward to a strong partnership between our two countries. Like the UK, Ghana will also have elections soon, and I hope for a positive outcome for my party and our continued good relations with Labour,” Mahama wrote.
The general elections saw the people of the UK – England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland – vote to elect their Members of Parliament.
Although various parties participated, the primary contest was between the Labour Party and the Conservatives.
Despite predictions favoring the Labour Party, the margin of their victory was staggering.
The Labour Party secured 412 seats out of a total of 650, while the incumbent Conservatives won only 121 seats.
This decisive win means that Keir Starmer is the Prime Minister-elect, as stipulated by the UK Parliamentary System of Government.
