Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as “Napo,” has resigned from his position as the Minister for Energy following his nomination and confirmation as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) running mate for the upcoming 2024 elections.

This strategic move is aimed at allowing him to fully dedicate himself to his new role as the party aims to break the eight-year cycle of governance.

A statement issued by the presidency on Thursday, July 11, and signed by Communications Director Eugene Arhin, announced that Dr. Prempeh’s resignation will take effect from Thursday, July 18.

The statement also noted that President Akufo-Addo has accepted the resignation and expressed gratitude for Dr. Prempeh’s dedication and service to the government.

“The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has today, Thursday, 11th July 2024, accepted the resignation from the office of Hon. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, as Minister for Energy, with effect from 18th July 2024.

This decision has been made to enable Dr. Opoku Prempeh to focus on his new role as the Vice-Presidential Candidate and Running Mate to the 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.”

Dr. Prempeh’s resignation signifies a significant shift as he transitions to a key role in the NPP’s campaign efforts, emphasizing his commitment to the party’s future success.

The presidency highlighted his impactful tenure, stating, “His tenure as Minister for Education and as Minister for Energy has been marked by a stellar record of accomplishments and significant contributions to the education and energy sectors.”
