The 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) concluded today, wrapping up a week-long assessment that began on July 8th and ended on July 15th, with an additional session on Monday for Arabic students.

This year’s exams saw participation from 569,095 candidates across Ghana.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) commended all candidates for their dedication and perseverance. They also thanked teachers, school heads, education directors, parents, and stakeholders for their support in preparing students for this crucial milestone.

The collective efforts ensured a smooth and successful examination period.

Stringent measures against examination malpractice were emphasized this year. The GES, in collaboration with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and security agencies, enforced strict adherence to exam rules across 2,123 centers nationwide.

This was aimed at maintaining the integrity of the exams and providing a fair testing environment for all candidates.

With the exams completed, attention now shifts to the school selection process. Details regarding the selection criteria and procedures will be communicated to candidates, parents, and the general public soon.

This phase is essential as it determines the placement of successful candidates into various senior high schools, marking the next step in their educational journey.

WAEC officials reported that 33 examination officials, including 19 teachers, were arrested for various infractions.

Despite these challenges, Mr. John K. Kapi, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, noted the overall success of the BECE, highlighting timely delivery of materials and special provisions for candidates with special needs.

Going forward, WAEC plans to implement more stringent measures to ensure professionalism among invigilators and supervisors.
