President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has defended the recent appointment of additional judges, highlighting the escalating workload faced by the judiciary.

This move contrasts with Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin’s advocacy for capping the number of judges.

At the swearing-in ceremony of 16 new Appeals Court judges at Jubilee House, the President endorsed Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo’s call for more judicial appointments.

He emphasized, “The significant expansion of the Court of Appeal personnel is a direct response to the challenge of an overburdened court system.”

Akufo-Addo further elaborated on the need for more judges due to the establishment of new courts across the country.

He noted, “The Chief Justice, with the support of the judicial council, has decided to establish permanent panels of the Court of Appeals in Sekondi, Koforidua, Kumasi, Tamale, and Accra.”
