Mid-Year Budget Review: Minority caucus calls on Bawumia to join debate

The Minority caucus in Parliament has extended an invitation to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to take part in the 2024 mid-year budget review debate.

This invitation comes in light of Dr. Bawumia’s significant role as the Chairman of the Economic Management Team, a position that places him at the heart of the government’s economic policy decisions.

Deputy Minority Whip Ibrahim Ahmed, in a statement, highlighted that parliamentary rules permit sitting Vice Presidents to engage in debates on the floor of the House.

“Given his crucial role, we believe his participation will enrich the discussion,” Ahmed stated.

The Minority caucus sees this as an opportunity for Dr. Bawumia to directly address economic concerns and policies.

The call for Dr. Bawumia’s involvement is also tied to the Minority’s preference for him to debate their spokesperson on the economy rather than former President John Mahama, who is the flagbearer for the NDC.

This distinction underscores the importance the Minority places on engaging with the current economic leadership directly.

The debate is scheduled to begin on Thursday, July 25, 2024, at 10 a.m. in the parliamentary chamber.

In their statement, the Minority emphasized, “We extend this public invitation to the Vice President, recognizing his pivotal role as the Chairman of the Economic Management Team of the government.”
