The government is set to establish a rehabilitation centre in the Ashanti Region to support individuals battling gaming and betting addiction. The initiative forms part of broader efforts to tackle the growing social consequences of gambling, especially among the youth.
Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak made the announcement at a press briefing during the Government Accountability Series held in Accra on Monday, July 14, 2025. He explained that the Gaming Commission has begun preliminary work toward the creation of the facility.
“This is part of a broader effort to reduce the impact of gambling addiction, particularly among the youth,” the Minister emphasized.
To strengthen regulatory presence, the Gaming Commission has opened four additional regional offices in Volta, Agona Swedru, Sekondi, and Asante Bekwai. The Commission has also intensified enforcement operations, recently shutting down two illegal casinos in Osu and Tema and sanctioning their operators.
In a move to enhance transparency and revenue collection, the Gaming Commission, in partnership with the Ghana Revenue Authority and licensed operators, has rolled out the Gaming Administrative Monitoring System (GAMS) — a digital tool designed to track gaming activities in real time.
While acknowledging the economic benefits of gaming, Mr. Muntaka stressed the importance of strong oversight to prevent exploitation and ensure public protection.
