Unlike NPP, Mahama gov’t spending is targeted and lean

Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has defended the Mahama administration’s spending approach, stressing that the government is committed to fiscal discipline and efficiency.

He contrasted this with what he described as the reckless overspending of the former Akufo-Addo-led NPP government, which he blames for worsening Ghana’s recent economic challenges.

Speaking at the Africa-Singapore Business Forum on Monday, August 25, Kwakye Ofosu argued that overspending and wasteful expenditure under the NPP left the economy vulnerable.

“One of the problems that precipitated the economic decline in the very recent past under the NPP was fiscal indiscipline, the tendency to live outside of our means and spend more than we earn,” he noted.

He emphasized that the current government is avoiding such pitfalls by directing resources into critical areas of national development.

“We are not spending beyond our means, we are not spending lavishly. We are spending on critical sectors,” the minister assured.

Pointing to cost-saving measures, Kwakye Ofosu highlighted Ghana’s small delegation to the Singapore forum as an example. Only a handful of ministers were part of the trip, a sharp contrast to the large entourages that, according to him, often accompanied former President Akufo-Addo on international travels.

The minister maintained that these deliberate choices reflect the Mahama government’s resolve to run a leaner and more responsible administration. He urged Ghanaians to take note of the difference in governance styles, insisting that the current approach prioritizes efficiency and accountability over waste and excess.
