Deputy Transport Minister Dorcas Toffey has announced that the first batch of 300 Metro Mass Transit buses is expected to arrive in Ghana on 15 February 2026, with the full fleet scheduled to be operational by April 2026. The initiative is part of the government’s efforts to reduce traffic congestion and improve public transportation in Accra.

Speaking to the media, Toffey said the Ministry of Transport has partnered with transport unions, including the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), to expand bus services and reduce fares, ensuring more vehicles are available for commuters. She added that private investors have also expressed interest in supporting the expansion of the fleet.

The Deputy Minister explained that the initiative follows engagements between the Vice President, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman, the Ministry of Transport, and transport unions, aimed at strengthening public transport services.

Toffey said she personally visited some of Accra’s most congested areas to assess commuter challenges. She noted that additional buses have already been deployed and that the government is rehabilitating older vehicles, including 15 Metro Mass buses, bringing the total number in operation to over 135 vehicles.

During a recent visit to Egypt, Toffey inspected Metro Mass Transit buses, which led to arrangements for the new fleet. She assured the public that the Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, and his deputies are working to revive the transport sector, and that commuters will soon experience improvements on Accra’s roads.
