Ghana’s national cricket team continued their impressive run in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Sub-Regional Africa Qualifier with a dramatic two-wicket victory over Malawi on Wednesday at the Achimota Cricket Oval in Accra.
The thrilling encounter saw Ghana secure victory off the final ball of the match, extending their unbeaten start in the six-nation tournament.
The competition, which runs from March 24 to 29, 2026, was officially launched on Monday at the Alisa Hotel by Sports Minister, Kofi Iddie Adams, with matches commencing the following day.
Having opened their campaign with a convincing six-wicket win over Seychelles, Ghana were pushed to the limit by Malawi in their second outing.
Malawi posted 98 runs for the loss of eight wickets in their innings — a target that appeared within reach for the hosts. However, Ghana’s chase proved far from straightforward, as Malawi’s bowlers mounted sustained pressure throughout the innings.
The match went down to the wire, with Ghana requiring four runs off the final delivery. After Philip Yevugah was dismissed in the penultimate over, Lee Nyarko stepped up and delivered under pressure, striking a boundary off the last ball to seal a narrow victory for the hosts.
The win lifts Ghana joint-top of the standings alongside Tanzania, with both teams on four points after two matches in the round-robin competition. The tournament features six teams competing for two qualification slots to the Regional Qualifier — the next stage on the road to the 2028 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
Tanzania also maintained their strong form, recording a commanding 158-run victory over Eswatini — the biggest win of the tournament so far — after earlier defeating Malawi by eight wickets in the opening fixture.
Seychelles moved into third place with two points after bouncing back from their defeat to Ghana with a seven-wicket win over St Helena on Wednesday.
Despite suffering a heavy loss to Tanzania, Eswatini occupy fourth position, also on two points, following their 27-run victory over St Helena on Tuesday.
St Helena remain at the bottom of the table without a point, alongside Malawi, who are yet to register a win in the competition.
The tournament will take a rest day on Thursday before resuming on Friday. Ghana will take on St Helena, while Malawi face Eswatini and Tanzania come up against Seychelles.
On Saturday, Ghana will battle Eswatini, Tanzania will face St Helena, and Seychelles will play Malawi. The final round of matches on Sunday will see Ghana clash with Tanzania, Seychelles take on Eswatini, and St Helena face Malawi.
