The National Theatre of Ghana has honoured legendary playwright James Ebo Whyte and past workers of the Theatre for their selfless and dedicated service spanning several decades

The recognition celebrated the former workers’ roles in shaping the institution’s artistic, technical, and administrative operations.

The occasion was the inaugural Our Own Awards, a special ceremony instituted to celebrate former staff members and legendary contributors whose decades of selfless service laid the foundation for performing arts in Ghana.

The highlight of the night was the presentation of the Distinguished Achievement Award in Theatre to legendary playwright, director, and CEO of Roverman Productions, James Ebo Whyte (affectionately known as Uncle Ebo Whyte).

Uncle Ebo Whyte was recognized for his transformative role in revitalizing Ghanaian stage theater and his enduring partnership with the National Theatre, which has hosted decades of his iconic productions.

In addition to Uncle Ebo Whyte, veteran staff members across key departments were presented with honors:

General Administration & Technical Support (National Theatre of Ghana)

  • Emmanuel Oblitey Tetteh
  • Nelson Dzandu

National Dance Company

  • David Amoo
  • Grace Djabatey

National Symphony Orchestra

  • Humphrey Kuto
  • Theresa Tetteh

Executive & Operational Leadership

  • Nii Ashikwei Kwabotswe II
  • Daniel Lamptey
  • Bossman Amoako
  • Seth Otumfo

Addressing the gathered awardees, management, and guests, the Executive Director of National Theatre Henry Herbert Malm emphasized that the creative industry stands on the shoulders of those who labored behind the scenes—often under challenging conditions—to ensure that lights, sound, dance, and symphonies executed seamlessly.

Uncle Ebo Whyte, speaking on behalf of the honourees, expressed profound appreciation to the management of the National Theatre for recognizing the sweat and sacrifices of veteran creatives and staff.

He urged the younger generation of performing artists and stage technicians to approach their craft with discipline, passion, and unyielding commitment to Ghanaian culture.
