As the Ghana Taekwondo Federation prepares for its upcoming elections, incumbent President Frederick Lartey Otu is seeking a historic third term in office, highlighting more than a decade of leadership and involvement in the development of the sport both locally and internationally.
Otu, who has led the federation since 2013, is credited with spearheading initiatives aimed at expanding participation, strengthening governance structures, improving technical standards, and creating opportunities for athletes, coaches, and officials.
During his tenure, Ghana Taekwondo has increased its engagement within continental and global structures while maintaining a strong focus on grassroots development.
Beyond Ghana, Otu serves as a Council Member of the African Taekwondo Union and chairs the body’s Development Committee, where he contributes to programmes aimed at growing the sport across the continent.
His international experience also includes serving on the World Taekwondo Development Committee and the Commonwealth Taekwondo Management Board.
Within the Olympic movement, Otu currently serves as 2nd Vice President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), having previously held the position of Treasurer. He also chairs the GOC Games and Technical Sub-Committee.
On the technical front, Otu has been a World Taekwondo International Referee since 1999 and currently serves as a World Taekwondo Technical Delegate. In 2024, he attained the prestigious Kukkiwon 7th Dan Black Belt.
Supporters of his bid point to his extensive administrative and technical experience as evidence of his ability to continue leading the federation through its next phase of growth.
They argue that continuity in leadership could help consolidate gains made over the past decade, strengthen Ghana’s influence within international Taekwondo circles, and create additional opportunities for athletes and coaches.
The upcoming election is expected to determine the future direction of the federation as delegates choose the leadership team that will guide Ghana Taekwondo over the next term.
