These surgeries were carried out at the Nsawam Prison Hospital and included procedures such as 32 hernia repairs, 14 lipomata removals, seven hydrocele treatments, two fibroadenoma surgeries, three bullet pellet removals, and five cystic body swelling treatments.
This initiative, according to Graphic Online reports, was made possible through collaboration with the Chosen Hospital and the True Vine Charismatic Church International.
The selected inmates, including females diagnosed with various surgical conditions, were from the Ankaful Maximum Prison, Nsawam Female Prison, Osamkrom Camp Prison, Nsawam Medium Security Prison, Nsawam Camp Prison, James Camp Prison, Akuse, and the Winneba Local Prison.
A skilled team of medical professionals, comprising five consultant surgeons, two senior medical officers, three anesthetists, and 20 allied health professionals, conducted the surgeries at the well-equipped Nsawam Prison Hospital.
“Access to adequate health care is a fundamental right, and this intervention ensures that inmates receive timely and quality medical care,” stated the Medical Superintendent at the Prison Hospital, Supt Dr. L.K. Acheampong.
This intervention is part of a broader reform effort by the Prisons Service to enhance prison conditions and ensure the health and well-being of inmates.
All 63 inmates are currently admitted to the Nsawam Prison Hospital ward, where they are receiving post-operative care with strict adherence to Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) protocols.
