Gladiator Cycling Club has honoured Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, with its annual Osagyefu Criterium at the Borteyman Sports Complex, while setting its sights on a bigger heritage ride to Nkroful in 2027.
The event, held on Monday, has become an annual fixture for the club as it uses cycling to celebrate the legacy of Dr Nkrumah, whom the club describes as a leader whose influence extended beyond Ghana and across Africa.
Speaking to the media after the race, Gladiator Cycling Club’s media representative, Nathaniel Hammond, said the club was pleased with the participation and performance of the cyclists.
“Expectations were high, and at the end of the day, we are very proud of all the cyclists that did,” Hammond said.
He said the club intends to build on the annual criterium by expanding its activities and taking the tribute to a new level with a planned ride to Nkroful, the hometown and final resting place of Dr Nkrumah, in 2027.
Hammond also used the occasion to encourage more Ghanaians to take an interest in cycling and consider joining the sport.
The Osagyefu Criterium forms part of Gladiator Cycling Club’s efforts to combine competitive cycling with the promotion of Ghana’s sporting and historical heritage.
The club said the annual event is intended not only to provide cyclists with a competitive platform but also to keep the memory and legacy of Dr Nkrumah alive through sport.
