The Chief Director of the Ministry of Health, Alhaji Hafiz Adam, has urged continued national discussions on healthcare, commending Tobinco for leading efforts to improve the sector.
Speaking at the maiden TMG National Health Dialogue, he praised the company for creating a platform to address key health challenges and encouraged it to sustain the initiative.
Alhaji Adam also announced that the government will roll out free primary healthcare nationwide next month to improve access to basic services. He said the move will ensure that Ghanaians can receive care at nearby facilities without difficulty.
He noted that Ghana has made progress in healthcare over the years, especially with the introduction of the National Health Insurance Scheme, which reduced the cost burden on citizens.
However, he warned that non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, cancer, and kidney failure are rising and putting pressure on the system.
To help address this, he said the government has introduced the Ghana Medical Trust Fund to support treatment for chronic illnesses not fully covered by insurance.
Alhaji Adam added that new medical equipment has improved diagnosis of diseases like tuberculosis, while efforts are underway to establish a national cancer registry.
Despite the progress, he acknowledged existing challenges, including funding and pressure on major hospitals, and called for collective action to strengthen the health system.
