NDC Greater Accra in turmoil as Executive pours hot water on Chairman

The Greater Accra branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is engulfed in chaos as internal conflicts among party executives escalate, threatening the party’s stability ahead of the upcoming elections.

According to the Custodian reports, during a tense Regional Executive meeting on July 4, 2024, at the party’s office in La, a heated dispute broke out between Regional Chairman Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore and Regional Women’s Organizer Felicia Mekpoi Bortey.

The confrontation began over disagreements regarding the distribution of motorbikes in the Sege Constituency. Chairman Moore’s refusal to allow Ms. Bortey to speak on the issue sparked a volatile exchange of insults.

The situation dramatically intensified when Chairman Moore allegedly made derogatory comments about Ms. Bortey’s character, accusing her of promiscuity.

In a fit of rage, Ms. Bortey retaliated by pouring hot water on Moore, leading to an attempted physical assault by Moore. The conflict was only quelled when other regional executives intervened.

Efforts to mediate the dispute have proven ineffective.

A team led by former CEO of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Sylvester Mensah, attempted to resolve the issue but was met with hostility.

Chairman Moore was recorded in a video dismissing the mediation team, highlighting the deep-seated divisions within the party.

This incident is a symptom of broader issues within the NDC’s Greater Accra branch, which has been plagued by factionalism and infighting.

One regional executive expressed concern, saying, “We have about four different factions in one region, and why should that be so? With the general election only five months away, this disunity could severely impact our performance.”

Historical tensions have also contributed to the current strife. Last year, Chairman Moore controversially overturned the suspension of Ayawaso-West-Wuogon Constituency Chairman Bismark Aborbi-Ayitey, which had been imposed by Regional Secretary Theophilus Tetteh Chaie.

The suspension was related to Aborbi-Ayitey’s participation in media discussions about internal party matters.

Moore’s decision to rescind the suspension, citing procedural flaws, has further deepened the rift within the party’s regional leadership.
