Nigerian cyclist Joseph David Ayibakuro delivered a commanding performance to emerge overall winner of the men’s race at the 2026 Ride Afrique Accra Criterium held at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The prestigious cycling event, which attracted over 200 male and female riders from Ghana and across Africa, concluded on a high note last weekend, further cementing its growing status on the continental calendar.
Competing in the men’s 30 laps covering a total distance of 105 kilometres, Ayibakuro showcased remarkable pace, endurance and tactical discipline. He took control of the race early and maintained his composure throughout, riding through the principal streets before powering to the finish line ahead of the competition.
Speaking after his victory, Ayibakuro credited teamwork and preparation for his success, while also commending organisers for sustaining the initiative.
“I want to appreciate my teammates; they did everything for me. The strategy we used was all about teamwork, so without the teamwork, I wouldn’t have been a winner today,” he said.
He further praised the impact of the Ride Afrique initiative on cyclists across the continent.
“Ride Afrique is a very fantastic event and has made us who we are today; it’s a good initiative for cyclists, and I’m grateful to the organisers,” he added.
Since its inception in 2019, the Ride Afrique Accra Criterium has played a key role in producing national champions and promoting the growth of cycling in Ghana and beyond.
Chief Executive Officer of the Ride Afrique project, Richard Agu, revealed plans to expand the event in subsequent editions, with improved structures and broader participation.
According to him, such platforms are crucial in enhancing cyclists’ performance and global rankings.
Mr Agu also expressed appreciation to the National Chief Imam, Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, for his presence and support during the event.
“Next year, hopefully, we’ll see the Chief Imam here again, or even the President. Every year, we intend to improve, and we’re looking forward to it. The cyclists did very well, and I was impressed with the turnout; it shows Ride Afrique is growing fast,” he noted.
Winners across various categories were rewarded with cash prizes, medals, trophies and products from sponsors, bringing the curtains down on another successful edition of the race.
