The Senior Staff Association-Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), the Federation of Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG), and the Teachers and Educational Workers Union of Trade Union Congress (TEWU-TUC) have called off their planned industrial action that was set to begin today, August 9th, 2024.

The unions had initially threatened to strike due to the government’s failure to meet their demands, which they had outlined in previous communications.

However, in a statement released earlier today, the unions announced their decision to suspend the strike after the government intervened to address their concerns.

The leadership of the unions expressed their appreciation for the prompt response from the authorities, noting that it was a significant step towards resolving the issues at hand.

Mr. George Ansong, the National Chairman of the Senior Staff Association-Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), spoke to Hot FM’s Taken Over News about the decision, emphasizing the unions’ willingness to engage in further dialogue to ensure that their members’ needs are fully met. He reiterated the unions’ commitment to working with the government to maintain industrial harmony within the education sector.

This suspension of the strike comes as a relief to many in the academic community, who were concerned about the potential disruption to university operations.

The unions have made it clear that while the strike is off for now, they will continue to monitor the situation closely and take further action if necessary to protect the interests of their members.
