Gladiators Cycling Club’s Ellen Anim has won the Elite Women’s title at the Osagyefo Criterium after edging a tight chasing pack in the six-lap race at Borteyman.
Anim completed the 67km course on University Farm Road in 2:11:24.00 at an average speed of 30.594 km/h to claim the GH¢7,500 first prize.
Subsea Cycling Club’s Coxson Treasure finished just five seconds behind Anim to place second, while Dynamic Cycling Club’s Mary Sunday Samuel took third, four seconds further back.
Gutten Cycling Team’s Abigail Tetteh finished fourth, followed by Subsea’s Patience Otuodung and Enerst Happiness in fifth and sixth respectively.
All six riders who started the Elite Women’s race completed the course.
The Osagyefo Criterium, organised by the Gladiators Cycling Club in honour of Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, has featured on the country’s road cycling calendar since 2021.
Anim credited God and her coach for the victory but admitted she still has areas to improve as she prepares for next season.
“I would say thank you to God and the coach for that, because he has taught me. I have made some mistakes and I’m going to correct them. I’m still training towards next year,” she said.
The Elite Women’s champion also called for greater investment in cycling, highlighting the high cost of equipment as one of the challenges limiting athletes in the sport.
She said more support could help cyclists compete at a higher level and further develop the sport in Ghana.
The top three finishers shared the cash prizes, with Anim taking GH¢7,500, while the second- and third-placed riders received GH¢4,000 and GH¢2,000 respectively.
